Helen M. (Haugen) Kapperman

Helen M. (Haugen) Kapperman, daughter of Myron and Millie (Rix) Haugen, was born on August 13, 1932 in Hartford, SD and passed away peacefully with her family at her side, at the age of 91, on April 27, 2024. She grew up in Hartford and graduated from Hartford High School in1950. After high school she graduated from Dakota State College in Madison, SD with a bachelor’s degree in education.

Helen was united in marriage with Jerome Kapperman on July 16, 1956 at St. George Catholic Church in Hartford, SD. Helen taught for a combination of 17 years. Jerome loved to move around so she taught at multiple schools around the Midwest which included Minnehaha County Country Schools, Hartford as well as Badger, Burnside and Bettendorf, IA.

Helen was a member of Risen Savior Catholic Church in Brandon and later St.Therese Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Helen was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Hartford. Helen enjoyed bowling and traveling with Jerome around the United States as well as Germany and other countries. Helen had a love of animals and made sure they always had a treat when they came to visit and enjoyed feeding shelled corn and peanuts to the squirrels out her back door.

Grateful for having shared her life are her countless in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Nels Haugen, Marvin Haugen, and Allen Haugen; and her husband: Jerome.

On Thursday, May 2, 2024 there will be visitation beginning at 5:00 PM at St. Therese Catholic Church with a Scripture Vigil at 7:00 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, May 3, 2024, 10:30 AM at St. Therese Catholic Church. 

In lieu of flowers, consider a memorial to St.Therese Building Fund, Avera Prairie Center or a charity of your choice.
